On the Commercial Fast Stream, seal the deal in one of Europe's largest buying organisations

3 years

As a Commercial Fast Streamer, you’ll be making sure the Civil Service achieves value for money for the taxpayer.

Every year we spend £160 billion of taxpayers' money with suppliers to provide public services. Central government spends over £49 billion each year on goods and services, so effective management of our commercial activities is incredibly important.

We have been through turbulent economic times and now more than ever, we are committed to improving the quality of services we provide to the public for less money through the decisions made by commercial professionals.

Negotiating contracts worth billions of pounds, you will ensure that government is in tune with markets, and manage our relationships with some of the biggest companies in the world. This means commercial activity attracts a huge amount of press and political attention. Applying sound judgement in commercial matters is vital in protecting the government's reputation.

Commercial Fast Streamers work across a broad range of departments and agencies such as the Home Office and the Department for International Trade. Through this essential cross-government work you’ll build the necessary networks and skills to become a successful commercial professional.

You will be working with senior stakeholders within weeks of joining. Commercial is very much a sector where doors are there to be opened and performance, more than seniority, drives career progression.

Commercial capability is increasingly recognised as the top skill sought by employers in all sectors and building commercial expertise and skills is one of the civil service’s top 3 priorities. Promotion and successful completion of the scheme will see you earn around £44k to £58k.
