Fast Stream application window to open on 20 September
We are delighted to announce that the Civil Service Fast Stream will open for applications at noon on Thursday 20 September 2018 at www.faststream.gov.uk.
Our graduate programme is currently ranked No.2 in the times Top 100 Graduate Employers; but we hope that you’ll make us your personal No.1 choice, once you hear more about what the Civil Service can offer.
If you are interested in applying to the Fast Stream, you are warmly invited to do some window shopping on our website, ahead of applications opening. You’ll be able to see which of our 15 schemes can best support your progression into a rewarding career and pre-register your details ahead of the application window.
We open for applications on 20 September, when you will be able to select up to four schemes in your application. Pre-registering your interest ahead of this date will place you amongst the first to apply, as we will be able to email you directly on 20 September to alert you that our campaign window is opening.
Our Summer and Early Diversity Internship programmes will also open for applications on 20 September. These programmes provide a taster of the Fast Stream and are open to undergraduates from one of the following groups:
The Summer Diversity Internship Programme (SDIP) offers eligible final or penultimate year undergraduates 6-9 weeks paid work experience over the Summer. Interns undertake their placements with a government department and receive training, as well as experiencing first-hand what it feels like to work for the Civil Service.
The Early Diversity Internship Programme provides eligible first-year undergraduates with an insight into the work of the Civil Service. It provides one week’s work experience in the Spring, shadowing Fast Streamers and enjoying skills workshops and networking sessions. All reasonable expenses are covered.
What are we looking for?
The Civil Service is looking for graduates with the potential to progress to the most senior levels of the Civil Service and become our future leaders. By ‘potential’ we mean graduates who have the motivation and ability to progress to the highest levels of our organisation. We are seeking the widest range of people, who can bring differing life experiences to their roles, enriching our organisation and helping us to better represent the whole of the society that we serve.
There is no typical Fast Streamer. We believe that people perform their best when they can be themselves at work. We value who you are before you join the Fast Stream and ensure that through flexible working you will still have time for the things that matter the most to you outside work.
What’s on offer?
The Civil Service offers a choice of career paths and regardless of the degree subject you studied, you’ll find a path that right for you. Each scheme develops Fast Streamers to work in a government profession and progress swiftly to the most senior levels. Many schemes offer professional qualifications and each role provides the opportunity to give back, delivering work that has a relevance and impact on people’s everyday lives.
The Fast Stream offers permanent roles across the UK, paying competitive salaries and providing unique career paths with one of the largest employers in the UK

I am who
In 2017 we introduced the 'Fast Pass' initiative to those who attend the SDIP internship. If you receive a positive appraisal, 'Fast Pass' allows you to be fast-tracked through to the assessment stage of Fast Stream, bypassing earlier stages and increasing your chance of success.
Your work on the Fast Stream will have unique intellectual appeal, and bring you unrivalled career scope and variety. In an environment of integrity, honesty, objectivity and political impartiality, all you have to do is be yourself, show enthusiasm and enjoy.
When you apply to the Fast Stream it’s your skills, attitude and outlook that matter in the selection process. The Civil Service Competency Framework has more details about what is expected of civil servants.
We are committed to recruiting people from a range of different backgrounds, and our programmes have won multiple awards for diversity and inclusivity.
We’re changing along with British society to reflect the communities we serve. Our record of diversity and inclusion puts us head and shoulders above most organisations.
