About

The European Fast Stream enables you to specialise in EU issues in the UK Civil Service during a time of significant change. As a European fast streamer, you could work on some of the UK’s highest priority policy areas as we develop our future relationships with the European Union. You may also work on wider UK domestic policy across the Civil Service.

You can also apply for the Diplomatic Service (European) scheme provided you meet the requirements for the Diplomatic service.

Requirements

  • you need to be eligible to work in the UK
  • you need an A-level grade C or above in any EU state member language other than English or you need to pass a professional language test administered by us
  • you need, or expect to have, a 2:2 in any degree subject or higher; existing civil servants can apply without a degree

You’ll spend four years in the European Fast Stream and benefit from EU-focused and UK-related postings in the UK Civil Service. You could be working on any of a vast range of issues including trade in the Department for International Trade, border control in the Home Office and sustainable fisheries in the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Nearly all UK government departments have a significant amount of EU-related business and the scope is almost endless.

What’s in it for you

Learning and development

You’ll start your development with a 3-day induction programme before you take up your first post.
In addition to on-the-job learning within departments, there’s a learning and development curriculum designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge that you’ll need as a senior civil servant.

You’ll learn through a mixture of face-to-face training courses and e-learning packages.
You’ll have regular development discussions with a designated cohort leader, who will challenge you to think about your career over both the short and long term. You’ll also have access to mentoring and coaching opportunities.

Up to £55k

If you successfully complete the scheme and are promoted, you could earn around £45k to £55k.

Online tests

The online tests consist of 2 questionnaires, an e-tray exercise and a video interview. We recommend you do some practice questions: Situational judgement questions.

You'll only move on to the next test, if you've successfully passed the previous one.

We'll ask you to take part in a series of exercises. This includes a leadership exercise, a group exercise and an analysis exercise.
